Habitat's Educational Approach

Habitat PWP’s approach to providing affordable housing is a highly successful approach that results in a permanent solution. It breaks the cycle of generational poverty by providing a path to affordable homeownership. While housing voucher and rental assistance programs are necessary for a short time, they are not a permanent solution. Unfortunately, if an individual is allowed to stay in those programs for too long, a cycle of dependency is created and they will never achieve self-sufficiency. Worse, this is how they teach their children to live, thus the cycle continues.

Habitat’s program gets to the core of poverty by offering a person of lower income a chance to help themselves. Although everyone thinks of houses when they think of Habitat, the educational component truly is the cornerstone of the program. Through this program, true life change takes place. Once accepted into the program, each homeowner candidate attends 20 educational classes that prepare them to become a lifelong homeowner. Habitat prepares them before they become a homeowner so they can maintain a lifetime of homeownership and self-sufficiency.
